About the Editors

Michael C. Flickinger is a distinguished Professor of Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Biological Process Technology at the University of Minnesota. After serving as the Director of the Fermentation Program at the National Cancer Institute, Frederick, Maryland, he was recruited as the founding Director for the cross-disciplinary Biological Process Technology Institute in Minnesota in 1985. As the 1993 Recipient of the American Chemical Society's David Perlman Memorial Lecturer Award, Dr. Flickinger has been recognized for his long-standing accomplishments in biochemical technology, biocatalysis, and bioseparation which include contributions to industrial fermentation technology, mammalian cell growth and metabolism, microbial genetics of organism of industrial interest, bioseparations technology, and microbial biochemistry. Dr. Flickinger was first Associate Editor for Biotechnology Progress, a joint publication of the American Chemical Society and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He has extensive experience in drug and biologics development, facilities design, process optimization, and manufacturing of fine chemicals, pharmaceutical and biologics for pre-clinical and clinical trials.

Stephen W. Drew is Vice President of Vaccine Technology and Engineering at Merck & Company, where his responsibilities include process technology for the global manufacturing of vaccines and other biologics and the engineering design of biomanufacturing facilities. In previous positions, he has been responsible for vaccine manufacturing operations, process technology for chemical and biochemical manufacturing of pharmaceuticals, and engineering design for chemical manufacturing facilities worldwide. Before joining Merck & Company in 1980, Dr. Drew was a Professor of Chemical Engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineers.
