Overview

Three components are needed to run Organic Syntheses

  1. A supported operating system and browser combination. See lists below for supported Windows and MAC configurations.
  2. A chemical structure drawing package.
    • Windows Users: Organic Syntheses supports two commercial chemical drawing packages, ISISDraw or ChemDraw. Windows users will need to have one of these programs loaded on their computer.

    • MAC Users: A Java applet for drawing structures, Marvin from ChemAxon, is provided with the Organic Syntheses product. Additionally, specific MAC configurations support "Cut and paste" from ChemDraw and ISISDraw. See the list below for specific details.

    • Do you use a structure drawing package other than Chemdraw or ISISDraw? If your software allows you to "copy or save" a structure from your drawing screen in a supported format (SMILES, MDL Molfiles, Rxnfiles, Sketch files, and CAS CXF files), the OS chemistry viewer allows for "pasting or opening" of structure information from a variety of applications.

  3. Software for viewing chemistry. This is provided as part of your subscription to Organic Syntheses. The software you need is dependent on your operating system so please refer to specific lists for Windows and MAC users
Windows Users

STEP 1: Confirm your system meets the following requirements
Operating System: Windows 98 and higher or NT 4.0 and higher
Browser: Netscape 4.0 - 7.x or Internet Explorer 4.0 - 6.x.
NETSCAPE USERS: Organic Syntheses requires an upgrade for some Netscape browsers in order to work. This software will be downloaded automatically if your browser requires it. The first time you open the Structure Search Page, if the upgrade is needed, a dialog box will appear on your screen requesting permission to download the upgrade for your version of Netscape. Grant permission and follow the on screen instructions to install the upgrade. You will only need to do this the first time you use the product.

STEP 2: Confirm that you have one of the following Chemical Drawing Package installed on your computer
You will need to have the full version of ChemDraw or ISISDraw installed on your computer. If you need this software, it is available from:

STEP 3: Download Chemistry viewer plug-in (Accelrys Accord Chemistry Control)
You will need to install the Accelrys Accord Chemistry Control. This browser plug-in allows you to display structures and reactions and use this information to search Organic Syntheses. Before downloading plug-in, please read the plug-in installation instructions below:

Trial Users - Click here to download the Chemical viewer plugin (Trial license access required)

Subscribers - Click here to download your Chemical viewer plugin (Standard license access required)

Plug-in Installation

  1. Once you have accepted the license agreement, you may be given the option to click 'open' to run the installation routine automatically. This will install the plug-in on your computer.
  2. Otherwise, click "SAVE" to save the program on your computer. Use "My Computer" to open the folder containing the install file. Double click the installation program to install the plug-in on your computer.
  3. Once the plug-in is installed, restart your browser so that it will recognize the plug-in.
  4. You MUST install your structure drawing package first (STEP 2) and then the plug-in (STEP 3) for the software to be recognized properly.

Congratulations, you have successfully loaded the software needed to use the Organic Syntheses Database and you are now ready to begin searching.

MAC Users:

STEP 1: Confirm your system meets the following requirements
Operating System and Browser combination

  • Mac OS X and Netscape 6x - 7x (best configuration for MAC users)
  • MAC OS X and Netscape 4.7x
  • MAC OS 9.x.x and Netscape 4.x. (this configuration does not support "cut and paste"

Internet Explorer CANNOT be used with any MAC version of this product

NETSCAPE USERS: Organic Syntheses requires an upgrade for some Netscape browsers in order to work. This software will be downloaded automatically the first time you open the Structure Search Page, if your browser requires it. Grant permission to download the upgrade and follow the on screen instructions to install it. You will only need to do this the first time you use the product

STEP 2: Launch the ChemAxon Marvin chemical drawing applet and viewer
Netscape 6.x users: Under Edit > Preferences > Advanced, the boxes for "Enable Java" and "Enable JavaScript" must be selected.
Netscape 4.x users: Under Edit > Preferences > Advanced, the boxes for "Enable Java" and "Enable JavaScript" must be selected. The "Enable Java Plugin" box MUST not be selected.
For the MAC we provide you with a Java applet provided by ChemAxon called MARVIN, which allows you to draw and view chemical structures and reactions. This program is automatically loaded to your computer the first time you open the Structure Search Page during a browser session. Once the viewer is loaded, clicking once on the box in the Structure Search Page will launch the Marvin drawing applet.
Troubleshooting: The MARVIN applet running on Netscape 4.7x requires Java 1.1 extensions provided by the browser. On Netscape 6.x the MARVIN applet requires java1.2 extensions which you may need to install. You will need to install the java1.2 extensions if you encounter a message similar to "plug-in could not be found". Do the following:

  1. Download MRJ OJI Plug-in for OS X from the MacIntosh site by clicking here .
  2. Install the plug-in by double clicking on the downloaded archive file. If the archive is not extracted automatically, start the Stuffit Expander and extract the archive manually.
  3. Move the MRJPluginCarbon file from the created MRJPluginCarbon-1.0 directory into Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder.

ChemDraw and ISISDraw users: Netscape 6.x supports cut-copy/paste and drag/drop integration with ChemDraw/ISIS Draw Stand Alone products. If you wish to use one of these structure drawing packages with the MAC version of Organic Syntheses you can do so. Simply draw your structure using one of these packages, open the MARVIN drawing applet by clicking on it, select the structure in the drawing package and use "cut-copy/paste" or drag & drop" to transfer the selected structure to the MARVIN sketcher. NOTE: Cut-copy/paste and drag/drop are not supported by Netscape 4.x and these users must use the Marvin drawing package provided

Congratulations, you should now have all the software needed to use the Organic Syntheses Database and you are now ready to begin searching.
