EMCBB author wins Nobel Prize for Medicine / Physiology
Robert Meyers and the team at the Encyclopedia of Molecular cell Biology and Molecular Medicine would like to congratulate Professor Shinya Yamanaka on winning the 2012 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine.

Professor Yamanaka's article, Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells is available online here and will also be available in the forthcoming book, Stem Cells, to be published in the spring. To reserve your copy, click here.

Professor Yamanaka, together with Professor Sir John Gurdon, were awarded the Prize in recognition of their discoveries that adult cells could be preprogrammed to revert to a pluripotent state. For more information on the Prize, click here.

Induced Pluripotent Stem CellsThe EMCBMM is delighted to announce that Nobel Prize Laureat, Shinya Yamanaka's article on Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells is now available online.

Following Professor Sir John Gurdon's discovery that cell specialisation is reversible, Professor Shinya Yamanaka ad his team at Kyoto University's Center for iPS Cell Research and Application, showed that intact mature cells can be reprogrammed to become pluripotent stem cells, able to develop further into all cell types.

Taken together, these two discoveries, made more than 40 years apart, have revolutionised our understanding of cell development. By removing the need for embryonic stem cells, this work has opened up new fields of cell science and will pave the way for new research into many human diseases and the potential development of new disgnostic tools and therapies.

In their article, Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells, Kazutoshi Takahashi and Shinya Yamanaka discuss the past, present and future of reprogramming, in the light of their discoveries.
