About this Book
Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Field Trip Guidebooks Series, Volume 147.
This field excursion starts and ends in St. Louis, Missouri. Established as a fur trading post in 1764 by French trader Pierre Laclede, St. Louis thrived because of its excellent location where the Missouri River flows into the Mississippi. The city is named after the French King Louis IX, and its early culture was determined mostly by the French. Today, with a population of about 2 million, St. Louis is one of the larger cities in the United states.
