Carcinoid tumors of the rectum : Effect of size, histopathology, and surgical treatment on metastasis free survival (pages 1294–1298)

Aaryan N. Koura, Geoffrey G. Giacco, Steven A. Curley, John M. Skibber, Barry W. Feig and Lee M. Ellis

Article first published online: 28 SEP 2000 | DOI: 10.1002/(SICI)1097-0142(19970401)79:7<1294::AID-CNCR4>3.0.CO;2-H

The clinical course, effect of surgical treatment, and tumor histopathologic characteristics were evaluated in 44 patients presenting with rectal carcinoid tumors at one cancer center between 1955 and 1994. Tumors > 2 cm and tumors > 1 cm with atypical histology were almost always associated with metastasis. Radical surgery did not increase metastasis free survival.

Evidence of clonal divergence in colorectal carcinoma (pages 1304–1314)

Rob A. E. M. Tollenaar, Bert A. Bonsing, Nel J. Kuipers-Dijkshoorn, Jo Hermans, Cornelis J. H. van de Velde, Cees J. Cornelisse and Gert Jan Fleuren

Article first published online: 28 SEP 2000 | DOI: 10.1002/(SICI)1097-0142(19970401)79:7<1304::AID-CNCR6>3.0.CO;2-G

Based on a large series of tumor samples, this article describes a model of DNA ploidy changes in all stages of colorectal carcinoma. It shows the emergence of DNA aneuploidy and clonal divergence during the transition from adenoma to carcinoma and describes a different DNA index distribution in hematogenous metastases as compared with the primary colorectal tumors.

The efficacy of laparoscopic staging in patients with upper gastrointestinal tumors (pages 1315–1319)

Els J. M. Nieveen van Dijkum, Laurens Th. de Wit, Otto M. van Delden, Erik A. J. Rauws, Jan J. B. van Lanschot, Hugo Obertop and Dirk J. Gouma

Article first published online: 28 SEP 2000 | DOI: 10.1002/(SICI)1097-0142(19970401)79:7<1315::AID-CNCR7>3.0.CO;2-F

Although the major advantage of diagnostic laparoscopy for patients with a gastrointestinal tumor is prevention of laparotomies, the question remains whether late laparotomies during follow-up are also prevented. In this study, the long term benefit of laparoscopic staging was obvious for patients with proximal bile duct tumors, liver tumors, and pancreatic body and tail tumors, but patients with esophageal tumors did not benefit from laparoscopic staging.

Hirotoshi Dosaka-Akita, Shi-Xue Hu, Michihiro Fujino, Masao Harada, Ichiro Kinoshita, Hong-Ji Xu, Noboru Kuzumaki, Yoshikazu Kawakami and William F. Benedict

Article first published online: 28 SEP 2000 | DOI: 10.1002/(SICI)1097-0142(19970401)79:7<1329::AID-CNCR9>3.0.CO;2-B

Positive or negative retinoblastoma (Rb) protein expression alone, as measured by immunohistochemical analysis, was not correlated with survival or prognosis in this cohort of patients with nonsmall cell lung cancer. However, combined immunohistochemical analysis of Rb and ras p21 and of Rb and p53 proteins demonstrated that patients with adenocarcinoma of the lung who had alterations of both Rb and ras p21 or of both Rb and p53 had significantly worse overall prognoses.

Effect of timing of postoperative chemotherapy on survival of dogs with osteosarcoma (pages 1343–1350)

John Berg, Mark C. Gebhardt and William M. Rand

Article first published online: 28 SEP 2000 | DOI: 10.1002/(SICI)1097-0142(19970401)79:7<1343::AID-CNCR11>3.0.CO;2-#

A randomized clinical trial was performed to assess the value of early postoperative initiation of chemotherapy for micrometastases of canine osteosarcoma. There was no significant difference in survival between dogs receiving early postoperative chemotherapy (chemotherapy initiated 2 days after surgery) and dogs receiving conventionally timed chemotherapy (chemotherapy initiated 10 days after surgery).

Patterns of mammographically detected calcifications after breast-conserving therapy associated with tumor recurrence (pages 1355–1361)

      D. David Dershaw, Catherine S. Giess, Beryl McCormick, Patrick Borgen, Laura Liberman, Andrea F. Abramson and Elizabeth Morris

Article first published online: 28 SEP 2000 | DOI: 10.1002/(SICI)1097-0142(19970401)79:7<1355::AID-CNCR13>3.0.CO;2-Z

When calcifications are observed mammographically in a recurrence of breast carcinoma after breast conservation therapy, their pattern is usually highly malignant. Less worrisome calcifications are unusual, and women should not undergo biopsy for new, benign types because these do not herald local treatment failure.

Comparative clinical efficacy and safety of a novel controlled-release oxycodone formulation and controlled-release hydromorphone in the treatment of cancer pain (pages 1428–1437)

Neil A. Hagen and Najib Babul

Article first published online: 28 SEP 2000 | DOI: 10.1002/(SICI)1097-0142(19970401)79:7<1428::AID-CNCR21>3.0.CO;2-0

Controlled-release oxycodone demonstrated effectiveness and a side effect profile similar to that of controlled-release hydromorphone in patients with severe cancer pain. This study offers evidence that oxycodone can be used as an alternative to conventional opioids in the treatment of chronic severe cancer pain.

Children with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) who develop cancer, especially those with embryonal malignancies, are at high risk for developing second malignant neoplasms (SMN), including monosomy 7 myelodysplastic syndrome. The role of somatic NF1 gene alterations in the genesis of these SMNs remains unclear.
