Procedure for the determination of total iodine using automated sample preparation and ion chromatography

Abstract

A Hewlett-Packard PrepStation/HPLC system has [fn1]been used to automatically process samples for the determination of total iodine. The protocol for sample preparation consists of sequentially hydrolyzing the sample, oxidizing any organic/inorganic iodo-compounds to iodate, and reduction of iodate to iodide. After preparation, liberated iodide is analyzed by ion chromatography. Selective detection of the iodide ion is accomplished using amperometric electrochemical detection at a platinum electrode. Chromatographic performance, precision, recovery, linearity, and accuracy were evaluated. The method is capable of routine determination of total iodine concentrations in the range 0.1–5 ppm total I using a single external standard but may be modified to determine concentrations outside of this range. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
