Abstract
Some pharmacological actions of ethanol extracts of M. elliptica, M. bracteata, M. quinquenervia and M. styphelioides as well as the volatile oil of M. elliptica were experimentally investigated. The ethanol extracts of the plants were nontoxic (LD50 are 102.5, 260.0, 147.5 and 168.0 mg/kg b.wt, respectively). The extracts inhibited spontaneous contraction of smooth muscle of isolated rabbit intestine and rat uterus. They produced myocardial inhibition and decreased the motility of Taenia worms. Ethanol extracts of M. elliptica, M. bracteata, M. quinquenervia and M. styphelioides had no antipyretic, antiinflammatory or molluscicidal activities, whereas the ethanol extract of M. styhphelioides had an analgesic effect in mice. The volatile oil of M. elliptica inhibited the intestinal motility but stimulated the myocardial contractions of rabbits. It had analgesic, molluscicidal and antimicrobial activities, but lacked both antipyretic and antiinflammatory effects.
