Abstract

Over the past decade, whole-genome radiation hybrid panels have been developed, for mapping purposes, in several organisms. Fusing donor cells, after irradiation, with rodent cells allows the construction of independent RH cell lines containing a different set of chromosomal segments of the donor genome. By increasing the radiation dose and selecting the resulting RH lines, efficient RH panels were constructed and used to produce high-resolution RH maps in many species. Beyond the mapping information in the species of interest, RH maps prove to be a powerful tool for comparative mapping. Furthermore, these RH maps are playing a crucial role for the assembly of genomic sequences in whole-genome sequencing projects.
