The monumental task that entailed the sequencing of the human genome required rapid improvements to the technology that underlies large-scale DNA sequencing. As such, the efforts of many groups of biochemists, molecular biologists, engineers, and bioinformaticians, working both in academia and industry, were required. This article provides a brief overview of some of the key developments in technology that helped to fuel the increased scale of this critical scientific endeavor.
