Transcription serves as a primary mechanism for regulating the activity of most genes in the human genome. Multiple regulatory mechanisms act together to influence the rate of initiation of transcription from specific regions in genes termed promoters. Genes may contain multiple promoters, and promoters may contain multiple sites of transcript initiation. A brief biochemical background is presented, followed by an overview of the properties of promoters that facilitate laboratory detection and bioinformatics prediction.
