Rickettsia are obligate intracellular bacteria associated with arthropods. Many Rickettsia species are the agents of human diseases. During the last years, genome sequence analysis has substantially advanced our understanding of the parasitic lifestyle and the virulence mechanisms of the microorganisms. Comparative genome analysis provided insights into the evolutionary mechanisms through which Rickettsia have adapted to their intracellular life.
