Comprehensive high-throughput analysis of the eukaryotic transcriptome provides unprecedented opportunity to understand gene structure and gene expression, and to use that knowledge to gain perspective of biological function. During the past decade, several new technologies based on DNA sequencing and hybridization approaches have been developed and applied to transcriptome analysis. In this overview, applications of these current technologies are discussed, as is the need for continued technology development.
