The large number of expressed sequence tags (ESTs) in public sequence databases has been invaluable in the identification of novel genes and in the production of expression maps and functional annotation of a large number of genomes. This chapter will provide an insight into the public EST repositories, including both those that store raw, unprocessed ESTs and those in which the redundant and error-prone ESTs are processed to yield gene indices. In addition, information will be provided about the consortia and commercial companies that generate and distribute the cDNA clone sets, which are the reagents for laboratory expression studies.
