Abstract

Undoubtedly, the advent of green fluorescent protein (GFP) technology has made great advancements into our understanding of how key cellular functions unfold. The ability to fluorescently tag a protein without perturbing its functioning is central to this and has allowed us to perform quantitative bioimaging of protein movements and concentrations within living cells. The challenge for the future is to further expand this technology with more sophisticated imaging equipment and improved fluorescent proteins with increased spectral variation, thus improving our current understanding of protein dynamics.
