Many diverse functions have been attributed to glycans on proteins and increasingly there is a need to characterize glycan structures. This article describes the laboratory approaches that are currently used for the analysis of glycans on proteins and considers Bioinformatics tools for the identification of putative protein glycosylation sites as well as for the analysis of the glycans themselves.
