Abstract

Shared computing facilities have been in existence since the early days of computing and the manner of sharing has evolved during that time from time-shared systems to networked computers sharing a user database to peer-to-peer networks and now to global grids of mutually accessible systems. Grid computing provides ubiquitous access to computing resources on a scale that no single organization can provide. With scale comes the more efficient utilization of resources, as organizations donate unused resources with the knowledge that necessary resources will be available when they need capacity past what they can provide. The definition of a computer grid, much less its implementation, is still nebulous, but standards are being put into place to provide the structure necessary to provide transparent access to seemingly unlimited resources.
