This entry begins with a brief overview of the biological background for vaccine action, and then describes the various phases of vaccine development, including early phases of identification of candidate vaccines, establishment of safety and immunogenicity in animals, safety and immunogenicity in humans, field efficacy trials, and post licensure studies. Measures of vaccine efficacy are described, and certain potential study biases are identified.
