Quantiles are the N − 1 points that divide a distribution or sample data into N equal and ordered parts. Some sets of these N − 1 points have well-known names: median (N = 2) and percentiles (N = 100). Quantiles are commonly used in testing of hypotheses, summarizing sample data, and modeling risk relationships.
