Apart from two periods working in the private sector, Halperin (1917–1988) had a career at the National Institutes of Health and later at George Washington University. He contributed to a wide range of statistical theory, including multivariate analysis, regression, interval estimation, distribution-free tests, and multiple comparisons. He helped to lay the foundations of multicenter clinical trials, writing on planning, data and safety monitoring, and stochastic curtailment.
