Kolmogorov (1903–1987), who worked in the Moscow State University, was one of the greatest mathematicians of the twentieth century. In probability theory, which was merely one of his fields of study, he introduced axioms and clarified various basic concepts. In statistics, he introduced the Kolmogorov–Smirnov statistic for testing goodness of fit, and worked on problems in estimation theory. His work in population genetics involved stochastic processes.
