Frank Yates spent almost all his working life in agricultural research at Rothamsted Experimental Station where he succeeded R. A. Fisher as head of a Statistics Department which at one point included twenty professional statisticians. He was a pioneer in three separate fields, experimental design, sample surveys, and statistical computation, to all of which he made fundamental contributions. He also worked in operational research and published two important papers on the analysis of two-by-two tables.
