In this chapter the physical layer of UTRA (UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access) is presented. The chapter starts with a brief description of the process that lead ETSI (European Telecommunications Standardisation Institute) to the choice of two different access techniques (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access – W-CDMA and Time Division Code division Multiple Access – TD-CDMA) to be used in the paired and unpaired UMTS frequency bands. A general description of the basic principles of W-CDMA and TD-CDMA is then provided, in order to ease the understanding of the behaviour and the flexibility of UTRA, whose description focuses mainly on the channel structure and on the physical layer control procedures. The rake receiver principles and the simplified system capacity evaluation are reported too.
