Chapter 5 provides a high level description of UMTS R99 Network Infrastructure.

The Circuit Switched domain and the Packet Switched domain are presented separately and as an evolution, respectively, of 2G GSM/GPRS systems.

The CS backbone description includes: GSM architecture, Mobility Management overview, UMTS architecture and specific features as ATM based transport and switching issues, SRNS relocation over Iu, multimedia call control.

The PS domain description includes: GPRS architecture, main Mobility and Session Management Procedures, Mobile IP based UMTS mobility, UMTS QoS classes.

Finally, post-R99 “All IP” network architecture is presented and QoS issues and possible solutions (IntServ, DiffServ) are discussed.
