This chapter defines the subject of image processing as the collection of techniques that aim at image digitisation and coding, image enhancement, image restoration and image preparation for use by a machine vision system. It defines the scope of the book as dealing with the last three topics with emphasis placed on linear transforms. It then proceeds to define the meaning of a linear transform and the conditions under which it applies, and derives the fundamental equation of image processing valid for shift invariant separable linear transformations.
