Summary

This chapter covers various techniques of image segmentation, namely image thresholding, Otsu and minimum error threshold, thresholding under variable illumination and region growing. It then naturally introduces edge detection as the complementary process of region segmentation, and gives a very thorough account of Sobel and Canny-type filter design, with step by step exposition of the pitfalls in the choice of the right filter, the right filter parameters, and the right edge detection parameters for images of different type.
