Summary

Describes the end-to-end performance characteristics that analogously determine users' perception of quality of data connections. Posits that the principal criteria for user satisfaction are times required to complete necessary exchanges of data and the residual errors in the data received. Shows the appropriate generic measure of QoS is completely expressed by time to complete data transactions under a particular data transmission protocol. Recommends appropriate quantifiers for a variety of different types of data services, including store-and-forward relay of messages or data packets, and fixed- and variable- speed dedicated connections.
