Summary

University students will need to become familiar with their own university website and that of other universities. Just as books have evolved a characteristic form over the past few hundred years, websites and webpages are evolving characteristic forms. When dissected, a typical university website reveals a number of characteristic hyperlinks which take the student or staff enquirer to sections, including tracts of information which deal with communications within the institution, news and newly updated information, the basic functions of a university such as homepages of the departments and frequently used links, for example to the library or university homepage. Many such sites have a local search engine; unfortunately, for some websites, this is the only way of following up queries, and it is not always the most efficient. The mind of a human searcher is often more competent than the instructions embodied in a search program.
