Summary

Governmental or intergovernmental sites often provide valuable data, though readers need to be careful about how the data have been interpreted, since governments can bias their interpretations of data. Generally however, such data (as opposed to the interpretations) are reliable. The homepages of the European Union present enormous amounts of data which are well-worth mining. For example, there is excellent, general information on Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy.
