Summary

This chapter covers the distributed network architecture, which is used to transport voice over a packet network, including the media and signaling gateways; and call control and other servers. Standardized protocols that can be used to communicate among these components over any packet technology are described including: MEGACO, Media Gateway Control Protocol, and SDP, Session Description Protocol. Signalling protocols that are specific to an individual transport technology are described in the chapter on that technology.
