This chapter describes ATM technology from the viewpoint of voice transport, identifying the service categories, QoS, signaling and adaptation layers appropriate for voice. Numerical examples are used to indicate how to achieve efficient network utilization. Standards for trunking and circuit emulation based on the above are described and compared. The chapter concludes with case examples of how VoATM can be used in the desktop, enterprise, ILEC and CLEC networks.
