In this chapter we first review DSL itself, from the market and technology standpoints. Then we move on to Voice over DSL, and indicate the reasons why many implementations choose ATM as the transport technology. The use of IP and voice directly over DSL are also described for comparison. The different perspectives of the CLEC and the ILEC on VoDSL are identified, leading to a specification of the market focus for VoDSL. Loop Emulation Service, LES, and its use of AAL2 are described.
