Part 2 of this book describes how voice is transported on each of the three major packet transport technologies: IP, ATM and Frame Relay including both engineering and business issues. For each of the three transport technologies, we provide a brief introduction to the technology itself, with an emphasis on voice-related issues. We then indicate how voice code is mapped into the transport packets, and how quality of service is provided. Each chapter concludes with case examples illustrating how packet voice can be implemented at the desktop and by an enterprise, ILEC and CLEC. A final chapter provides a comparison among the three transport technologies.
