Abstract

Radionuclides of cesium are generated mainly from nuclear fission. Many cesium radionuclides are known, but 134Cs and 137Cs are of the greatest concern because of their radiological properties. Cesium is present in polluted effluents of nuclear power plants. Gas, liquid, and solid wastes contaminated with cesium can be found but aqueous effluents, where cesium is present in the cationic form, are the most common. These cations can reach agricultural fields due to their high affinity for clays. Thus, cesium radionuclides can be incorporated into the food chain, and ultimately transported to human beings.
