The fission yeast S. pombe provides an attractive alternative system to budding yeast S. cerevisiae for studies of fundamental cell biology. Fission yeast is a particularly powerful model for studies of cell cycle, chromosome dynamics, and polarity. Other areas of study are also expanding. Conceptually similar genetic tools are available in both systems, and both organisms have completely sequenced genomes.
