Summary

This chapter presents the practical experiences and issues of implementing a clinical picture-achieving and communication system (PACS). Checklists are included for potential PACS buyers so that they can address some of the common issues involved in the planning, installation; and postinstallation maintenance of a PACS and teleradiology system. The process of implementing a PACS is presented step by step. Specific details and considerations within each step of the implementation process is discussed, and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School's (UTSMS) experiences are presented as examples of each step. One of the goals of this chapter is to provide the potential PACS buyer with a practical guide throughout the maze of PACS and teleradiology implementation.
