Chapter 1 presents a systematic overview of quality of service (QoS) control methods including admission control, traffic access control, packet scheduling, buffer management, flow and congestion control, and QoS routing. It introduces ATM, Internet Integrated Services (Intserv), Internet Differentiated Services (Diffserv), and Multiprotocol label switching (MPLS). Traffic characterization and QoS parameters are also described.
