Summary

This chapter reviews applications and research themes in visible image retrieval (VisIR), that is, retrieval by content of heterogeneous collections of single images generated with visible spectrum technologies. A number of examples encompassing different semantic levels and application contexts, including retrieval of trademarks and of art images, are presented and discussed, providing insight into the state of the art of content-based image retrieval systems and techniques.
