Summary
During the last decade gene therapy has emerged as a novel option to conventional chemical and radiotherapy for cancer treatment. As with these therapies, specificity is an important issue that needs to be addressed. With the increase in our knowledge about transcriptional biology, more regulatory elements are available as potential tools to control the expression of therapeutic genes selectively within cancer cells. In this chapter, the latest achievements made in the field of transcriptional targeting using tumor- and tissue-selective promoters are reviewed.
