Summary

Chapter 14 expands on the previously introduced concepts of polymers at interfaces and briefly extends the treatment to polymers in solution as colloidal systems. The treatment includes a short introduction to the thermodynamic factors controlling polymer solubility and the “size” of dissolved polymer chains. The activity of polymers at interfaces is discussed, including adsorption phenomena, chain configuration, the role of solvent properties, etc. The interactions commonly encountered between dissolved or adsorbed polymers with other solutes, especially surfactants, is covered. The discussion includes some experimental results related to the various surfactant classes.
