Summary

Chapter 16 presents a historical tour of the development of methods for categorical data analysis. Beginning in 1900, it discusses the Pearson–Yule association controversy and the Pearson–Fisher disagreements about degrees of freedom. It summarizes the many contributions of R. A. Fisher. It then surveys the development of logistic regression methods and related loglinear methods for multiway contingency tables. It finishes by surveying recent developments and predicting future areas of increasing importance.
