Abstract

In recent years, great progress has been made in improving our understanding of the impacts of macropore flow on the leaching of agrochemicals through the soil unsaturated zone, and this knowledge has been incorporated into a number of models describing these processes. Application of these models for regulation of agrochemicals would appear desirable, but at present, this is contentious and limited by a lack of information concerning the accuracy of model predictions and, therefore, the confidence that can be placed in the simulation results. This article attempts to summarize the current state-of-the-art with respect to parameterization, calibration, and validation of macropore flow models and the application of these kinds of models for regulatory purposes.
