In 1986, imidacloprid was discovered as a new insecticide with a unique structure and with a hitherto unrecognized insecticidal performance. Since being launched on the Japanese market in 1992, its sales potential has increased yearly, and it ranks as one of the top-selling insecticides in the world in 2000. Imidacloprid, besides its agricultural use, is also used for the control of subterranean pests and pet ectoparasites.
