Ethylene is a unique air pollutant, because it is also a naturally occurring plant hormone responsible for regulating growth and senescence. It is even produced in response to stress. Ethylene is released directly into the atmosphere and is defined as a primary air pollutant. Ethylene is also unique, because of its positive or negative physiologic or growth-regulating effects on flowers and fruits.
