Abstract

Genetic engineering provides methods for isolating, selectively amplifying, and expressing genes encoding desirable traits. Because the majority of currently used plant-transformation techniques introduce genes into individual totipotent plant cells, it is important that an established tissue culture system, a working regeneration protocol, and an effective method for introducing genes must exist for successful deployment of plant genetic engineering. Therefore, genetic engineering of plants encompasses plant tissue culture, techniques of plant gene transfer, and plant molecular biology.
