Fracture mechanics is a technology that deals with the effects of a sharp crack on the load-bearing capacity of materials and structures. It is a tool used to translate the results of laboratory fracture toughness testing into an analysis of structural safety and integrity of structural components. In this unit, the load–displacement behaviors of notched specimens are discussed and a brief description of G, K, J, and δ is presented.
