Summary

The aim of this appendix is to give a counterfactual definition of confounding for open cohort studies that is analogous to the definition given in Chapter 2 for closed cohort studies, and to demonstrate the connection to case-control studies under the stationary population assumption.

The section and subsection headings of the appendix are as follows:

  • Open Cohort Studies

    • Counterfactual Definition of Confounding

    • Proportional Hazards Assumption

  • Case-Control Studies
