Ethylenesulfonic (or ethenesulfonic) acid, often incorrectly named vinylsulfonic acid, has been known for over 100 years. It is a readily available monomer that can be polymerized into a strongly acidic polyelectrolyte. Preparation and properties of the monomer, polymerization and properties of the polymers, and uses are discussed.
