Summary
In this chapter we introduce cell membranes and their basic properties. Tight and gap junctions are specializations of the plasma membrane. Organelles, which are bounded by membranes, can be divided into those bounded by a double membrane - nuclei, mitochondria and chloroplasts - and those bounded by a single membrane - peroxisomes, the endoplasmic reticulum, the Golgi apparatus and lysosomes.
