Abstract

The first world history of irrigation appeared in 1856, and it has remained the only one to the present. The four volumes of the “Recherches sur les arrosages chez les peuples anciens” (Research on Watering among Ancients) describe hydraulic enterprizes from the most modest to the most monumental, and provide the political and social history of people who mobilized and organized themselves for this purpose.
