Summary

This is the first of three chapters devoted to the development of simple models of organic chemicals cycling in environmental systems. The general approach consists of combining compound-specific and system-specific process models. It starts with linear box models of lakes and oceans, discusses the role of suspended particles and of the sediment-water interface, and ends with a one-dimensional continuous vertical lake model.
